Formalizing Explanatory Dialogues

چکیده
Many work have proposed architectures and models to incorporate explanation within agent’s design for various reasons (i.e. human-agent teamwork improvement, training in virtual environment [11], belief revision [6], etc.), with this novel architectures a problematic is emerged: how to communicate these explanations in a goal-directed and rule-governed dialogue system? In this paper we formalize Walton’s CE dialectical system of explanatory dialogues in the framework of Prakken. We extend this formalization within the Extended CE system by generalizing the protocol and incorporating a general account of dialectical shifts. More precisely, we show how a shift to any dialogue type can take place, as an example we describe a shift to argumentative dialogue with the goal of giving the explainee the possibility to challenge explainer’s explanations. In addition, we propose the use of commitment and understanding stores to avoid circular and inconsistent explanations and to judge the success of explanation. We show that the dialogue terminates, under specific conditions, in finite steps and the space complexity of the stores evolves polynomially in the size of the explanatory model.

Explanatory Content and Multi-Turn Dialogues in Tutoring
We aim to systematically investigate the effects of explanatory content and multi-turn dialogues on learning during tutoring by implementing alternative tutoring regimens in an intelligent tutoring system for a letter sequence extrapolation task. It is plausible that the power of tutoring resides, in part, in the fact that a tutor can extend right/wrong discourse moves like "OK" and "are you su...
متن کاملExplanatory dialogues with argumentative faculties over inconsistent knowledge bases
We introduce a formal model of explanatory dialogue called EDS. We extend this model by including argumentation capacities to facilitate knowledge acquisition in inconsistent knowledge bases. To prove the relevance of such model we provide the dalek (DiALectical Explanation in Knowledge-bases) framework that implements this model. We show the usefulness of the framework on a real-world applicat...
متن کاملA Pattern Language for Dialogue Management
Modeling human computer interactions as dialog, while originating in voice user interfaces, is becoming increasingly important for multimodal systems. Di erent approaches with regard to formalizing and managing dialogues exist with their speci c strength and weaknesses. In this paper, we present existing dialogue management techniques as patterns to give a basis for decision support when develo...
متن کاملAlison Cawsey: Explanation and Interaction. The Computer Generation of Explanatory Dialogues.
The book presents a model of interactive explanation generation and its implementation as the tutorial dialogue system EDGE (Explanatory Discourse GEnerator). EDGE produces explanations on electronic circuits and, by entering a dialogue with the user, is able to adjust its explanations according to the user's background knowledge and her understanding of the ongoing explanation. The system, ori...
متن کاملA pragmatic view on pragmatic trials
Clinical trials have been the main tool used by the health sciences community to test and evaluate interventions, Trials can fall into two broad categories: pragmatic and explanatory. Pragmatic trials are designed to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in real-life routine practice conditions, whereas explanatory trials aim to test whether an intervention works under optimal situations....
